Many are aware of the budget shortfall faced by Charles County - TopicsExpress

Many are aware of the budget shortfall faced by Charles County Government. What most are not familiar with is where an almost $6.5 million shortfall is coming from. During the height of the recession, the previous Board of Charles County Commissioners entered into a one-sided, ill-conceived and ultimately ill-fated deal for the Indian Head Technology Park, actually located in Bryans Road. The deal was if the developers were not successful in attracting businesses to locate there, the county must purchase the land at the 2008 value of the property. That date has arrived and there has been a suggestion that we dip into funds earmarked for education to purchase the property. I cannot support that. It is disgraceful that a deal was entered into where the total obligation was borne by the taxpayers of Charles County and our school children should not suffer the consequences of this half-baked idea. We are obligated to purchase the property and it is my hope it can be resold to an entity that will preserve the land that is located in the Mattawoman Watershed.
