Many argue that the Taliban have committed atrocities on civilians - one can say they are responding to Pak elite atrocities, killings, torture and oppression. Elite atrocities are nothing new recurring for decades. Who remembers Operation Zarbe Azbs predecessor, Operation searchlight in 1971 where they openly bragged about killing 3 million Muslims in Bangladesh? What happened? The partition of entire country by people who despised them. Wouldnt you? Operation Searchlight was a planned military operation carried out by the Pakistan Army to curb the Bengali nationalist movement in the erstwhile East Pakistan in March 1971. Ordered by the central government in West Pakistan, this was seen as the sequel to Operation Blitz which had been launched in November 1970. The original plan envisioned taking control of the major cities and then eliminating all opposition, political or military, within one month. President Yahya Khan at the February conference said Kill three million of them (Bangladeshis) and the rest will eat out of our hands. Prolonged Bengali resistance was not anticipated by the Pakistani military leaders. The operation precipitated the 1971 Bangladesh genocide and caused roughly 10 million refugees to flee to India as well as the death of 58,000 to 3,000,000 civilians. The Taliban are little different - they are reacting to elite atrocities - their insulting of the sharia, mismanagement of a country, involvement with foreign powers, corruption, embezzlement etc all of which has led to the death, impoverishment and suffering of tens of millions of Pakistanis. You cannot get away talking about this topic without addressing the regime - otherwise you become little more than a lackey or apologist for the Pak elite and confuse the discussion with intellectual rubble and clutter. - Zafer Iqbal
