Many house cats go missing because they bolt or simply walk out - TopicsExpress

Many house cats go missing because they bolt or simply walk out the door when the opportunity arises. My vet gave me some great advice to keep your cats away from doors they may escape from and it really works, try it: 1) Buy an air horn (or two). 2) Go out, leaving the door open a crack and as soon as that little nose appears, hit the horn! You can also stay inside and open the door a crack, and when the cat even LOOKS like he may want to go out, hit the horn. The idea is to make the cat associate that horrible, scary sound with the door. You may have to repeat two or 3 times and reinforce as necessary, but I can tell you from experience, my four cats stay away from the front, back and basement doors. Theyre only allowed out the deck door, and Ive trained Leonard not to go out that door unless he has his harness and leash on. (He tends to want to jump overboard to visit his feral friends...) Also, please be sure all your animals are microchipped and check annually to be sure all the info is accurate and up to date. Have fun with the air horn, and feel free to use it on unsuspecting guests as well. ;)
