Many mallards, geese, several species of sparrows, and the northern harrier all agreed that today was a beautiful day on the Siuslaw estuary. These birds and more were spotted at Waite Ranch today as part of a pre-restoration bird monitoring program. Planned restoration of tidal marsh habitats at Waite Ranch will add complexity to the ecosystem and the results will be seen in use by an increased diversity of bird species, including the presence of more shorebirds that depend on tidal marsh and mudflat habitat to provide stopover respites on their long migrations. More on shorebirds can be found at fws.gov/oregoncoast/wildlife/shorebird.htm.
