Many miles covered and memories made during the season. Now resting at home I reflect on the people I have met during my time in the chair and sleigh. Wishes from children for parents to be free of Cancer, sisters or brothers to return home from Afghanistan and Iraq... money to pay bills, and requests for Peace on Earth from youngsters to young to even understand what it is they are asking for. Some wishes are hard to deliver on, some can be assured with only a personal commitment and agreement from the requesting individual themselves. A young mother approached me and even before getting to me began tearing up while holding on to her young daughter. As I reached out for her hand she came closer and with her free arm embraced me in a hug. Her tears continued to flow.... when I asked what was making her cry she spoke of her fathers recent passing. Its so hard, were the only words she said to me. As her body trembled she held tightly to her child. I assured her that her father was indeed close to her, and now watching over her from heaven. His love for her continued in her heart and in her memories of what was formulated over the years of their relation. After a few more minutes she calmed down, and smiled up at me. Squeezing her hand and telling her things would be alright is all I could muster... it was at that point I realized I too felt her pain, and perhaps it was transferred to me so she could have some relief... either way, she walked away with a brighter outlook because I saw it in her appreciative smile and wave good bye! As she walked from the set she paused, smiled again, hugged her child even closer, and responded, You have a good soul Santa, probably one of the best people Ive met-Merry Christmas and thank you! Today, the boots are off and the suit hung for the cleaners. The body is worn and tired but the souls once again refreshed. Another season gone by until the ringing of the bell to usher in the New Year. My hopes and wish is for people to carry on the true meaning of the season, and yes for those who doubt, there is even more work to do... you can count on me to be there with a listening ear, and a hug at the ready...
