Many of my San Antonio friends and family know Jeff Cancino. He graduated from John Jay High school in 1992, was a former professor at UTSA and currently an associate professor at Texas State. He is also known by many of our colleagues from his graduate school days at Michigan State University and his contributions to the Network. Please read the note below and share with your friends, family and co-workers. Thanks. Dear Friends of Jeffrey Cancino, As some of you might know, our friend dear Jeffrey Cancino suffered a devastating medical condition in late May 2014 that has left him in a compromised physical state. Jeff experienced a substantial aneurysm in the cerebellum region of his brain. After a series of cranial surgeries in the following weeks to relieve pressure, Jeff stabilized and started his long journey toward recovery. Jeff has been blessed with a strong, close-knit family and close personal friends who have provided an indescribable support system to help him during this process. Like many of you receiving this communication, the Friends of Jeffrey Cancino* committee know him to be a friend who is always there for those who need his help. Jeff’s sense of humor, his love of his family, his commitment to his scholarship and community, and the many subtle ways he shows he cares have inspired us through the years. Jeff’s gregarious laugh is nearly infectious and we look forward to the day when his rehabilitation progresses to the point where he can return to work and fully engage with those with whom he is closest. The timing of Jeff’s return to work is unknown at this time and the impacts of a health crisis of this magnitude go far beyond the physical. As Jeff continues with his recovery we know it will certainly prove to be a very long road. We have launched a campaign to help raise financial support to help Jeff and his family in the weeks and months that follow. Those of us coordinating this effort are in close contact with Jeff and this is done with his full knowledge and blessing. Additionally, 100% of any funds collected will go directly to Jeff. Friends of Jeffrey Cancino will initiate two different efforts and ask your support in anyways you are able: 1. Donated Raffle/Auction Items: In concert with the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University we will be hosting a raffle/auction at MSU’s reception at the ASC conference in San Francisco on Friday, November 21st. We ask you to consider donating any items you believe appropriate for raffle and/or silent auction. We have, for example, already secured 1 donated tablet and a one week’s stay at a 2 bedroom apartment in Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz (Spain, homeaway/vacation-rental/p474442). If you are not able to transport donated items to San Francisco directly, please contact us and we might be able to assist in that process. 2. Friends of Jeffrey Cancino Fundly site: We have also created a location to provide direct financial support through a fundraising site called Fundly. Those wishing can make a donation and leave a note for Jeff and his family. The url for the site is: https://fundly/friends-of-jeff# We appreciate your time and hope you can help us send a clear message to Jeff and his family: We wish him a speedy recovery and the knowledge that many of us continue to think of him. If you have any questions about this effort, please do not hesitate to contact us at the following email address: friendsofjeffreycancino@gmail. Thank you for your consideration, Friends of Jeffrey Cancino * About Friends of Jeffrey Cancino: Friends of Jeffrey Cancino is a group comprised of close personal friends of Jeff’s from the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University.
