Many of my friends are confused between privileges and rights. - TopicsExpress

Many of my friends are confused between privileges and rights. I have an easy explanation here, based on the movie Made In Dagenham. This movie talks about how women who works in Dagenham Ford factory as sewist were on strike to demand for equal pay as men. The lead character in this movie played the role of the leader of the strike. Initially she has her husband blessing for the strike. Later on, Ford assert pressure on her husband, who also works in ford, so that he would in turn pressure her wife to withdraw from the strike. As the wife become more and more active with the strike movement, he felt neglected by the wife, and was very upset by that. One day, he was so angry that he went to confront the wife. He told his wife, that he deserve better treatment from her, because unlike many other husbands, he never abused, or never beaten her. The wife then said Dont you get it? Thats the point Its right! Not privilege! What she meant, was not being abused and not being abused, was her RIGHT, which is what she is entitled to naturally. Its not a privilege that she enjoys at the pleasure and discretion of the husband. I hope we can have a better understanding on the differences between rights, and privileges. Other examples I can think of are as followed :- 1) to live in a place with shelter : your right 2) to live in a mansion in bukit kiara : your privilege not your right 3) to eat basic food to survive : your right 4) to eat in 5 star hotel for buffet : your privilege not your right 5) to get primary and secondary education : your right 6) to get into university and pursue an academic degree : your privilege (often being mistook as right) 7) to vote in a GE : your right 8) to be conferred Datukship: your privilege not your right. 9) to roam around freely in legally permissible public area : your right 10) to visit your rich frienda house : your privilege not your right. Rights are inalienable and its a natural entitlement based on fundamental human rights and natural justice. Privileges are given to you as extra, are subjected to normative qualifications, and is discretionary to certain group/category of individual. Hope that clears the air Abit. Mistook your right as privilege : you are pathetic and sad Mistook your privilege as right : you are abusive and infringing others rights.
