Many of my friends who have know me for a while have probably heard me express serious concern about an event like this. The article suggests that a large enough event could leave the world without electricity for a year, but I honestly couldnt see it taking more than 30-60 days to get an at least partially working grid back in place. Even 30 days completely without electricty would bring the western world to its knees. Billions could potentially starve. The number of people who could self-subsist is incredibly small. Nearly EVERYONE depends on the local grocery store as a source for ALL their food, and with no electricity to pump the fuel into trucks to deliver food to said stores, grocery shelves would be empty in mere days. Starving people will be DESPERATE people who will do ANYTHING to feed themselves. Complete CHAOS would ensue, it would happen QUICKLY. Commerce as we know it would cease to exist. EVERYTHING is done electronically these days. I think a barter system would eventually develop, but not before billions died. I know Im not prepared for such an event, and Im not sure I even could prepare for something this catastrophic. It scares the crap out of me, to be honest.
