Many of our physicians travel all over the world taking care of children. This week our own Dr. Adam Silverman and Dr. Vic Herson are in Haiti, along with a few of our amazing nurses doing things to make the world a better place. This week we will be posting Dr. Silvermans journal entries about his experience there. We hope your enjoy! “In February of 2014, Dr. Vic Herson and I came to Cap-Haitian, Haiti to learn as much as we could about the care of newborn and neonates at Justinien University Hospital (JUH). We had spent the preceding months planning the trip with the staff of Konbit Sante, a non-profit from Portland, Maine with long standing ties to JUH, and Dr. St. Fleur, a Haitian pediatrician working at JUH. During our week-long assessment we identified a number of opportunities for collaboration and capacity building. One of these opportunities was to provide formal training in effective and timely resuscitation of newborns born at JUH who demonstrate signs of distress. So Vic and I began to plan a return trip to JUH with the goal of training as many pediatric and maternity doctors and nurses in the skills needed to provide appropriate newborn care. We recruited Ellen Skoly and Steve Mahier, experienced Connecticut Childrens NICU and PICU nurses respectively, as well as Dr. Sandy Motta, a pediatrician educator specializing in healthy newborn care and neonatal resuscitation training. The last few weeks have been a bit hectic as we coordinated our busy schedules to make arrangement to get down to Cap-Haitian and plan for enough education sessions to meet the needs of all of the learners. Steve and I arrived yesterday after a relatively smooth 12 hour journey. Vic, Ellen and Sandy arrived today after a similar length of travel but without their 2 checked bags contains personal items as well as the majority of our training equipment. But despite this obstacle, everyone remained in good spirits. We spent the afternoon orienting our 3 Haitian translators to our trained planning as well as making sure that they were familiar with all of the terms and phrases we would be using. Were all set for our first training session tomorrow morning.”
