Many of our young men in this modern culture are suffering from what I call a Peter Pan syndrome. The symptoms are avoidance of responsibility and a desire to play and have fun while others foot the bill. This spirit will work in young men convincing them that those who refuse to enable them are being unloving. That if someone were to insist that they become responsible that person is bullying them or pushing their values on them. Young men with this spirit working in them find ways to avoid full time employment that requires they have any sort of fixed schedule by which to follow. Do not mistake the ability to talk of goals and lofty ideas as doing something about them. This is a ploy of that spirit to sidetrack those listening and make them think the young man is actually up to something when in practice he is not. Under the rule of this spirit much mental energy is spent on finding ways to avoid detection. So while there is evidence of laziness towards responsibility there is obviously a strong work ethic towards play and towards avoidance of responsibility. This spirit thrives under the lie that says, "You are only young once so live it up while you can, you have plenty of time to get your act together." Like Peter Pan who is not a hero but a tyrant this spirit despises authority and consequences. Those deemed responsible in society are demonized, and relabeled in order to justify a rejection of their wisdom. In the end, when things turn bad, the parents will inevitably be blamed because everyone should know that young men should never be forced to grow up.
