Many of us were surprised yesterday morning by the announcement that our Superintendent, Dr. Meria Carstarphen, will be seeking Board approval next Tuesday of an initiative to extend domestic partner benefits to qualified individuals in non-traditional family situations, based on such criteria as shared financial dependence or interdependence. The video below contains a clip from an interview that I shared on the subject yesterday afternoon. I wholeheartedly support this recommendation of the Administration. In a state with such high rates of uninsured individuals, this initiative, if passed, will help our AISD teachers, staff members and administrators in non-traditional family situations to obtain healthcare coverage for their loved ones. It will reflect our city’s commitment to valuing and celebrating diversity. And it will help our District to remain competitive, attracting the best teachers, staff members and administrators to our schools despite the non-traditional living situations in which some might find themselves. Please watch the video below and share your perspective on the issue!
