Many of you have asked what type of treats I use for training on Lucky Dog. Answer: Whatever the dog responds to best. Every dog fancies something different. Some love food treats while others love toys. The way I find out is an elimination process. The first thing I figure out is does the dog have more of a food drive or a prey drive. If its a food drive then I present several different options of treats. I break up a small handful (pinky nail size pieces) of each treat and begin to work the dog. After a few minutes I can see through their focus, attention span, body posture and overall work drive which one they prefer. Theres always a favorite. Do this with lots of different treats. Once you find what that dog truly loves the results will be like night and day. A good treat is equivalent to a high denomination. Ask yourself, would you rather work for 20 dollars or 100 dollars? Well thats what treats are to a dog. The same method goes for prey drive. Some dogs like tennis balls, others like tugs. Bottom line: Give them what they want and theyll give you what you want. #dogtraining
