Many of you have commented on the difficulties caused by differences between indoor and outdoor temperatures and varying degrees of humidity during the winter. There is nothing we can do about shops and banks that are heated to sub-tropical temperatures so that the staff can dress for summer in the height of winter and you break out in a sweat as you come through the door. If it is your own home, however, keep the thermostat at a moderate temperature - around 20 degrees centigrade maximum rather than so warm you are wandering around in short sleeves. If you feel chilly, put on a light sweater rather than cranking up the thermostat. That way the difference is not so marked when you go outdoors. Putting a light weight open weave scarf round your face so that your nose and mouth are protected also helps. Just avoid anything that results in inhaling bits of fluff and lint. ;-) If dry heat irritates you, saline nose drops can help to alleviate the irritation and prevent the post nasal drip that can trigger coughing and an asthma attack. Putting a dish of water above the radiator in your bedroom can help to increase humidity to more comfortable levels. If, on the other hand, high humidity is what gets you going you may need to invest in a dehumidifier. It also helps if you air the house at every opportunity to let fresh air in and mould spores and other allergens out. Remember to turn on the extractor when cooking to get rid of steam. We hope that these tips help some of you. They are all backed by first hand experience :-)
