Many of you know that Ive worked on the environmental occurrence of perchlorate in groundwater. Perchlorate is highly soluble, thus it ends up in food (especially produce, milk, and citrus) from irrigation and (past) fertilizer application, as well as water. It is a thyroid inhibitor causing hypothyroidism (in fact perchlorate pills use to be prescribed for HYPERthryoidism), in turn leading to, among other things, depression and obesity, two American epidemics.
