Many of you know that Sean has been taking Taekwondo for a year - TopicsExpress

Many of you know that Sean has been taking Taekwondo for a year now. He just earned his blue belt two weeks ago. Throughout the past year, hes had many ups and downs in class because of his ADHD and Autism. We told the center, when he joined, that we only wanted to sign up month to month because of his issues...we werent sure how he would do. They told us that we need to have faith in him, that they would correct him and that we needed to commit for Taekwondo to become an important part of Seans life. So, we did. Fast forward to Friday. Sean bumped into (hard) two other boys while running to get in line. He did not say he was sorry. The instructor took his Blue Belt. Sean, devastated, started to cry. The instructor stood all the children in formation (it was a full house), told Sean I am not here to be your babysitter and kicked him out of class. Sean was hysterical, very upset. His hero thought he was a baby and kicked him out of class. Yesterday the Taekwondo center called and told us that Sean should not come back to Taekwondo, ever. It is so heartbreaking to have a special needs child...I am struggling so hard with this. Sean was not great in class, and he occassionally did not do the right thing. But he also had great classes and worked so hard to achieve his blue belt. Isnt taekwondo supposed to teach these kids what is right? What message did his instructor just send Sean - that he is hopeless and will never be anything more than a baby?? Sean went into taekwondo with no self confidence. He was supposed to come out confident...not reassured that he is not welcome because he is not a normal kid. This guy was his hero, and the damage has been done. I dont post this so that you comment, I post that those of you with special needs children know that you are not the only ones out there (it is easy to feel like you are, and feels sometimes impossible to know what course of action is best for your child).
