Many of you remember Martinsons Chili Shack at 408 Main Street, - TopicsExpress

Many of you remember Martinsons Chili Shack at 408 Main Street, the little wooden building. The location has quite a history, but right now, I am going to give you some of the notes of Genevieve Mong-Garrett (mother of Jane Garrett) and the RECIPE for their famous chili. First, notes from Mrs. Garrett she penned June 18, 1994: Ray Garrett recalls eating at Martinsons Chili Shack around 1927-28-29 when he was just a kid with not much money. It was outstanding chili - he still remembers it. Ray recalls that Mr. Martinson had several pop bottles on the counter. Each bottle had a hole punched in the bottle cap. These bottles were filled with vinegar, hot peppers, and herbs. This seasonal vinegar shakened over the chili was delicious. Another memory of Martinsons Chili Shack was Mr. George C. Pitney who lived at 215 Indiana across the street from Ray who lived at 220 Indiana. Mr. Pitney would take his son Jack and all of the neighborhood children to the little cafe and buy them a hamburger - the hamburgers were 5 cents each. Ray said they were really tasty. They were so tasty that we kids would eat them real slowly so they would last longer. I will add the recipe in a followup comment to this.
