Many of you subscribe to OKBIRDS. I apologize for the double-dose of emails regarding the Pontotoc Ridge WBC. The 8th winter bird count at Pontotoc Ridge Preserve will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015. I hope you will attend. Participants will need to be at the preserve 7:30 am. We will form teams and assign preserve sections promptly at 7:30. To sign up, please send me an email. (I need everyone planning to attend to sign up, please. It makes my life so much easier!) College students are encouraged to attend. If you teach, please announce the count to your students. Lunch will be provided by the Conservancy at the new headquarters building. This will be the first year we have had such a great place to warm up, eat, and relax. Yay! After lunch, we will attempt to flush, identify and count grassland birds in the preserve’s meadows. David Gainey, a faithful and constant Pontotoc Ridge volunteer and TNC supporter, passed away on January 1st. He helped with the very first Pontotoc Ridge Winter Bird Count and attended all but one subsequent WBCs. David attended every volunteer work day and most of the field trips. We will have a memorial for David at the Pontotoc Ridge volunteer work day February 21st . Let’s honor David on January 24th by enjoying a day together birding and having a great count.
