Many people are shocked to learn that I do not believe in an afterlife. To this I can make three salient points: 1) Our identity, or personality, our memories: all of these are encoded in our brain chemistry. You mess with the brain, these things change. Therefore, when the brain dies, these things die as well. 2) Who wants to live forever? I certainly dont. 3) The thought of death motivates me to make sure I use what little time I have to leave my mark upon the world, so that the memory of me will live on. That is my reason for being alive.
