Many people are using 1 John 2:27 to back up the idea that we are no longer in need of any type of leadership. The verse reads you have the anointing and need not that any man teach you. I had a pastor years ago who always said that if you take a text out of the context, you are left with a con. In the very text before this one, verse 26, it says I am writing you this about those who are trying to deceive you. The writer is saying hold fast to the original gospel which you heard, because there are false teachers who have come out from among us that will try to lure you to their following who are teaching lies. The following verses then go on to admonish us to Remain in Christ, and to recognize that Everyone who does righteousness is born of God. Essentially, verse 27 is saying to allow the anointing to teach us rather then men who teach strange doctrines that are contrary to the original good news. Leadership has been abused in the church as well as in the world, but that is no reason to throw it out! You may say Jesus is all I need, He is the same yesterday today and forever! The context of that Scripture is the following: Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Heb 13:7-8
