Many people consider Rembrandt (倫勃朗) to be one of the best - TopicsExpress

Many people consider Rembrandt (倫勃朗) to be one of the best portrait painters in history. Yes, he was talented with his brush, but a main feature in all of his work is the lighting. If you look at the works of many Dutch painters from the 16th and 17th century, you will notice that they almost always have a cross-light. A cross-light is a light source that comes from one side of the subject to the other side. There are many ways to achieve this look using artificial light, example one, or using natural light, example two. Rembrandt more than likely used window light in most of his portraits; that is good news for us, as it is a free, and beautiful light source. One of the key features of his cross light is the triangle, on cheek on the opposite side of the light source. The first picture I took was using a 60X90cm softbox to the left of my subject, Marcin. The second picture is using a huge window to light my subject, Mate. A side note that I will talk about more later: The larger the light source, the softer the light will be. Soft light= less harsh shadows, and a very even light.
