Many people have asked me why my song Pave My Way is not called - TopicsExpress

Many people have asked me why my song Pave My Way is not called Fingers Crossed since I repeat those words throughout the chorus, and why the song Fingers Crossed isnt called something else entirely since it only uses that term once in the beginning of the verse. Also, there has been some confusion on what the title song is because of these seemingly mismatched song titles. Let me try my best to explain my reasoning for those of you who might be curious. The song Fingers Crossed is the oldest song on the EP (over two years old), and for me, this song marks the beginning of my serious song writing. For those of you who dont know, some people believe that crossing fingers behind your back can nullify your lie...almost as if your lie doesnt count if your fingers are crossed behind you. During this time of my life (mid-highschool career), I went through a lot of doubt in regards to my music and if I was able to pursue performance as a career...I felt as though I needed to cross my fingers behind my back as I convinced myself I was able to succeed in this world. Although the song is not entirely about my self-doubt, I felt called to the name Fingers Crossed in order to represent not only my own struggles, but the story of the song. Despite all of the lovely encouragement from friends and family, there are always people who cause ripples in determination or confidence. Without turning this post into a rant about the flack Ive received after I decided to major in Music Performance, I will say that the world is not always a supportive place. A year after I wrote Fingers Crossed, I had a late afternoon epiphany, and created Pave My Way as a personal letter, reminder, and anthem. I decided to ignore the criticism and to appreciate the advice. I decided that instead of (figuratively) crossing my fingers behind my back as I feigned confidence in my career choice (and other aspects of my life), I would simply work my hardest, pave my way, and cross my fingers that my hard work would pay off. I decided to show how far I had come by changing the connotation of crossed fingers. However, Pave My Way is not about crossed fingers at all, despite what the repetitive chorus implies. Its about picking the weeds to reveal the flowers, learning from those who matter, personal empowerment, and only expecting to receive what you are willing to work for. If I renamed the song after crossing my fingers, it would lose its strength and defiance. It would be about simply hoping for the best, and seeing where life lead rather than forging your own way. On the contrary, if I renamed Fingers Crossed, it would lose the representation of the doubt and uncertainty I had to endure in order to realize how hard I am willing to work, and exactly what I am working for. However, I didnt want to name my EP Pave My Way because that only represents the here and now...the future. Im who I am because of who I used to be, and Fingers Crossed was the only term that represented doubtful Taylor, determined Taylor, and the Taylor I hope to become. I hope this brought some light on the confusing song titles! :) Also, let me know if you have an opinion on what the title song is! Id be curious to hear all input.
