Many people who claim to be Christian seem uncertain about judging. My take is one must discern but NEVER condemn or sentence. The famous verse Judge not ..... in Matt 7:1 refers to behaving as a judge nothing more. In the Greek the word krina is used meaning to sentence as a judge would. In Jesus day judges (shopetim) were religious leaders which adds another dimension to this onerous task. If you are not a judge you still have no excuse for not discerning the truth by equating evaluating the facts with sentencing a brother. ( making a judgment. No No No ! ) Be it second rate behaviour or unkindness or iniquity it requires discernment before it can be acted on. Generations of Churchmen have done no end of harm to their brothers by excusing them from discerning the morality of the actions and behaviours they deal with on a daily basis. The trick is to realize that the people who behave in a base way are broken (raah) and it is impossible to raise them up by condoning behaviours that bring them down
