Many people will experience floaters in their vision at some time during their lifetime. While in many cases floaters end up being harmless (but annoying!), a sudden increase in the size or number of floaters or accompanying light flashes warrants immediate evaluation to rule out the possibility of more serious retinal complications which can produce exactly the same symptoms. What patients with floaters are actually seeing are the shadows the floaters (which are strands of proteins in the gel-like vitreous inside the eye) cast on the retina. This is video shows what the doctors see when we look inside your eye. Dr. Anderson often describes floaters as being like the particles inside a snow globe; when you move your eye the floaters get tossed up into the gel and then they gradually sink back downwards. Merry Christmas!
