Many schools in Kenya, use the hand-held bell to manage and control time usage. Now, bell-ringers, during my time, were a celebrated lot. A bell ringer was known by the whole school. S/he was the punctual type, not like Fuata Nyuki Wa Kungu, who was a perrenial late comer. A bell ringer was very powerful. S/he, could cut a very entertaining breaktime play, with a single ring, and send the whole school running to classes. The most awaited ring, was the lunchtime ring. In our primary days, we would wait at the gate and with bated breaths for that ring, as hunger pangs devoured our little bellies. And once the first ring went off, we would scramble out and run home like crazy. . .
