Many sided day. Marveled at these UNESCO declared buildings today. Firstly Santa Sofia (760) in Benevento has an internal hexagon surrounded by a decagonal ring which combine to give a star shape to the building. I really wanted to get behind the walls to see the contemporary sculptures. But no luck. After traveling from the west coast over the Apennines to the east coast we arrived at the13th century octagonal shaped medieval castle, Castle del Monte(1240). An octagonal tower is at each corner. The magnificent building sits atop a rocky bank on a mountain overlooking the landscape of Puglia to the coastal township of Barletta - think of the spur on the boot of Italy. The weather and sunset made it all the more mystical.
