Many things have transpired that have brought changes in my families life. Today I begin a new tradition in my home. However, those traditions stem from my post last year of memories, thankful memories. I wish you all a happy thanksgiving..On Thanksgiving, home is comfortable: warm like a hug and familiar like smell of something baking and feeling that it was made just for you. But so often the duality of life slips in and our loved ones are taken away. One Thanksgiving, our family gathered at our parents’ home. We knew it would be our Mom’s last Thanksgiving. She knew it, too. We knew that she knew how much we loved her. Whats great about family is that they know you. Whats frustrating about family is that they assume they know everything about you. It is the inevitable tension that comes with being known but still yearning to be discovered. Its often taken for granted but that those closest to us know that we love them. Mom had said “I dont know when, but I know God is going to take me home. Hes going to take me home. Her comment had crossed my mind during that Thanksgiving dinner that made me ask myself - What didnt I know about her life? What had I not said? How much of these moments would I remember? What I know is that there is still the absence of an everyday presence that requires adjusting -- slippers found that bring back a story and smile, a song or smell that triggers a forgotten memory. What I remember is that no matter how old we are, parents still get excited when their children return for a visit. Kids like to roll our eyes, and sure, it can be a little embarrassing, but they love it. With siblings there is an element of service; it was an exercise in acknowledgment, patience, and of course, delectable, savory food: Turkey, ham, Mashed potatoes, sweet potato, rye boat, black olives, rolls, and the canned shaped cranberry sauce. So today I am thankful for having accepting parents that are demonstrative of their love, siblings that gave me everlasting memories (and never having to wash the dishes), children that surprise me every day, a husband that supports me, and friend that make me smile -- no matter my shortcomings.
