March 11 - John 5:1- 30 - THE SON GIVES LIFE TO WHOM HE IS PLEASED TO GIVE IT Verse 21; “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it,” (Although this is speaking of spiritual healing, the same applies for physical healing, as we will see from this passage). This is a very interesting statement. Some will say that Jesus only heals those with enough faith and others will say that Jesus only heals believers. In this passage both these beliefs were contradicted. Firstly, this man, who was an invalid for 38 years, did not even know who Jesus was. Secondly, he exercised no faith whatsoever (read the passage for yourself). But, Jesus still healed him. Why? Because He chose to do so. It pleased Him to do so, as it says in verse 21. We must be careful to tell others that God will only act under certain circumstances and in certain ways. Our God is unlimited and almighty. He does not need man to prescribe to Him when and how to act. Whatever we receive from Him is by grace and grace alone. We do not deserve anything from Him, because of our sinful nature. Verse 13 clearly tells you that this man had no idea who healed him and furthermore there is no indication that he even came to faith in Christ afterwards. No, Jesus healed him because He was pleased to do so. Sometimes people get saved when they are not even looking for Jesus. Such a man was Paul, on his way to Damascus. But God decided, according to His good will and purposes, to save Paul and use him for taking the Gospel to the Gentiles. Was Paul looking to be saved? Certainly not. He was on his way to persecute God’s children, the Christians. Did he deserve to be saved? Certainly not. So why did he get saved? Because it pleased almighty God to save him! If you are saved, thank God continuously for His grace in your life! The Bible in a year: Numbers 24, 25; Acts 21
