March 16, 2014 TO SAY GOODBYE THOU SHALT GUIDE ME. PSALM 73:24 A Presence in the Dark Dots house is dark. The curtains are drawn and the old radio crackles with static. Her face is the brightest light in the room as I settle down with her on the ancient couch. We talk of her childhood, her marriage, her ninety-eight years. Under my breath, Im chastising God: Why do you leave her here alone? Dot, are you sure youre okay, living by yourself? For sure. I have my church friends, she says, and my neighbors are always coming by. She pauses., Her voice softens, as though shes ready to share a secret. At might, I go to my room and sit on the side of my bed and wait. Then the boy comes and I talk to him. What boy, Dot? I ask, looking for some kind of confusion on her face. But her eyes are clear and steady. Oh, Pam, you know, the boy---the one who went to Bethlehem to see the star. I sense that Im on hallowed ground. Its so quiet and peaceful in my room. The boy loves the dark peacefulness of the night. I ask him why Im still here. He doesnt say a thing. She pauses. I wonder if they have forgotten me and he just smiles. Is there something Im supposed to do? I ask. But he still doesnt answer. He just waits with me until I fall asleep. I have come to comfort Dot, but I leave comforted. Surely in the way that suits her best, God is with her, helping her endure, until her day of transition comes. Father, be present with us, our steady Guide, pointing out the way You want us to go, Pam Kidd
