March 19th: Maya Lin designed the Civil Rights memorial in Montgomery, Alabama commemorating 40 people who had died during the Civil Rights Movement. The names were of activists who were working towards equality from 1954-1968. She won a national contest at the age of 21 to be the designer of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., a design that she had to defend to congress because of it not being a heroic statue of some kind. Instead, she decided to make a wall inscribed with the names of the dead. Not only is she a designer and architect, she is also an environmentalist. She is creating awareness through her art, such as the one she created for the public fine art collection of the MGM Mirages CityCenter in Las Vegas. She created a cast of the Colorado River to signify how important that river is for energy and water for Nevadans and how important water conservation is. She has started a project called What Is Missing? to shed light on the planets changing environment, lost species and plants. She asks the question what environmental changes have you experienced since childhood. She also asks the question, If deforestation happened in your city, how quickly would you work to fix it? in regard to the rain forest deforestation and pointing out how long it would take to rid famous parks using the rate of deforestation as guide (Central Park would be gone in 9 minutes). mayalin/ whatismissing.net gazettenet/opinion/11196968-95/miliann-kang-taking-stock-of-whats-missing-with-a-prod-from-environmental-visionary-maya
