Speaker – Michael Parker – IBM Innovation Center Michael started off by thanking Rotary for the hospitality and friendship he and his family have received over the past two years and especially the experience of Owen who was the outbound exchange student for the Orleans Club in 2012-2013. We are also greatful to the Parkers for hosting two of our students (Shihoko and Alkin). Michael challenged us to look at Rotary under the same three criteria IBM measures itself. A big organization using its size to change the world; how is the use of technology changing the world; and how are thinking machines changing our lives. It holds 20,000 patents in the US alone and has spent $17B on acquisition since 2010. Hardware now makes up less than 10% of the total business portfolio while consulting and software account for 80%. Michael provided an overall outlook of IBM’s strategic plans and the specific areas IBM is targeting such as Big Data, Mobility, Social Media, Security/Cyber protection, and Cognitive thinking. Michael encouraged us to experience IBM’s Cognitive thinking by visiting Youtube and searching for WATSON.
