This downtown Newark business provides trophies, engraved plaques, sports apparel, custom clothing to area school districts, businesses, non-for-profits and local government agencies. In 1991, while working at Pal Energy, Al Schober pursued his dream of opening his own business, Sports Cards Plus in Newark. This business specialized in sports card and memorabilia. He partnered with Dick Wheaton and later incorporated as Arcadia Sports & Awards. During the peak years of collecting sports cards, the two traveled to Major League Baseball and Super Bowl shows selling their product. They sold apparel and novelties at kiosks in Rochester malls during the holidays. It was this venture that allowed them to purchase the current building at 210 North Main Street in 1999. As time went on, Al realized that the sports card market was beginning to die out. He wanted a business that was “real and more substantial” that he could eventually sell at time of retirement. Thus with the move to North Main Street, they brought in silk-screening to diversify. This opened a whole new venue for Arcadia Sports & Awards. In 2005 Schober bought out Wheaton and today runs the business with the help of two other full time employees. As you look about the store you will find racks for School Spirit wear. Arcadia Sports provides spirit wear for Newark, Marion, Clyde-Savannah, Lyons, Pal-Mac, Sodus, Midlakes and Williamson. From shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and bags, spirit wear lines the racks and walls. You will also find equipment for baseball, wrestling, cheerleading, swimming, volleyball, and soccer. If you have a scout, you find a full line of Boy and Girl Scouts essentials for completing their uniform. The annual pinewood derby kits and accessories are also found lined in the glass cases. Although school and youth sports programs make up a large chunk of his business, they also service reunions, rock band, auto shows and vacation trips. The silk-screening, embroidery and engraving division is the bread and butter of the business. The retail area primarily showcases the kinds of products we can offer and create. The trophy and engraving division is host to many events whether it be business or sports related. With a variety of custom trophies and plaques there is something for every occasion. Whether it is as simple as a name plate or as complex as an 8 ft. trophy it is all created and assembled in the back room. The secret to keeping the business afloat during the challenging economic times is diversification, flexibility and strong customer service. Our philosophy is working with our customers face to face. The personal connection is important for many reasons. Customers need to know they are important. They need to touch, feel, and explain what they want. We listen, suggest, and provide them with quality professional service. Stop by Arcadia Sports & Awards to see what they can do for you, your business, your school sports team, or event. 210 North Main St. Newark, NY Monday – Friday 10am – 6pm Saturday 10am – 2pm Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce events committee would like to offer chamber members/businesses an opportunity to become a sponsor for our 2nd Annual Wine and Artisans Festival June 20, 2014.
