March 7 “Boasting” – Judges 6-9 Judges 7.2 – “The Lord said to Gideon, ‘You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her.’” We humans have a great capacity for delusions of grandeur. We like to think that we are indispensable. We take more credit than we deserve and pass any blame on to others. It comes naturally to us. The truth is far different. God called Gideon to rise up as a judge and deliverer against the Midianites. Gideon gathered an army and was ready to go out for battle. But, God told him something you wouldn’t expect too many military commanders to say: “You have too many soldiers.” God said that if they had too many men, they would boast in themselves in the victory. They would do what comes naturally. God wanted it to be crystal clear that the victory was the Lord’s and it was accomplished in His strength and might. So, God only allowed Gideon to take 300 men against thousands of Midianites. Of course, they routed the Midianites despite being greatly outnumbered because God did it. He fought for them and gave them strength. The Apostle Paul prayed for us, “that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit” (Ephesians 3.16). Any power we have comes from God. We cannot take credit for anything that He does through us. It is His strength, His Spirit, His power that enables us to do anything that is of lasting value. We have no reason to boast. Paul said, “God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6.14). Gideon’s strength and our strength come from God. May we only boast in Him.
