March 9, 1841, The U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of the 41 African slaves who had seized the Spanish slave ship schooner La Amistad (Friendship) and gained control before being intercepted by the U.S. Navy off Connecticutt. Their case was successfully argued by former President and now Congressman, John Quincey Adams, ably assisted by Roger Sherman Baldwin. 7 of the 9 Justices were slave owners but Great Britain and the United States had signed a Treaty banning the importation of African slaves in 1807, and Adams and Baldwin successfully proved they were Africans, not slaves from Cuba. Stephen Spielberg made the story into a movie starring Matthew McConaughey, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, Djimon Hounsou, and Chiwetel Ejiofer.
