Marching for ourselves and our children Maybe there is too much - TopicsExpress

Marching for ourselves and our children Maybe there is too much bad news about global warming. Maybe some people think that our fate is set in stone and can’t be changed. I hear people who believe the facts that have been put forth in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and, more recently, the World Meteorological Organization say, “Oh well, we’re fried.” It seems as though they accept the news and then watch quietly as more fuel is piled on the fire. These scientific reports are not put out just to depress us. They are warning us so we can do something to make things better. They have delivered the challenge of our lifetimes. And if we act, we can keep conditions from being unbearable for our children. If you know a child who was born in 2010 that child will be forty years old at mid century. It is predicted that things will be very hard by then if we continue warming the atmosphere at the present rate. So let’s do something about it. Inventers, innovators, and technologists are doing their part. Did you know that researchers at Michigan State University have developed a solar panel that is clear like glass? Many developments that can help us are on the way, but will only have their greatest impact if we act now. We members of the public need to tell our leaders that we want to leave our children a beautiful, livable world like the one we’ve enjoyed. In the United States, we need our leaders to change course toward a new, low-emissions energy path. If they don’t, we will be passed by other countries. Just last week, according to Worldwatch Institute, India launched what it is calling “Solar India,” its mission to increase its solar generation capacity more that 6,000 fold in 12 years. There should be no more pointing fingers at developing countries and saying, ”There is no use in us doing anything if they don’t.” To get our leaders to take notice and change course, huge numbers of us need to come together and let our voices be heard. On Sunday, Sept. 21st, people across the nation and around the world will assemble and peacefully speak out about their climate concerns. The People’s Climate March is planned to alert the heads of state at the climate change meeting called for Sept 23rd in New York City by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Tens of thousands of people representing over 1,000 environmental, faith-based, small business, social justice, international non-governmental, parenting, public health, student, civic, and labor organizations are signed on to march in New York City. These marchers expressing their urgent desire for action limiting greenhouse gases are converging from across the country. Some are going from Oklahoma. Over 1800 marches and events are scheduled to be held worldwide including in the cities of London, Berlin, Paris, Delhi, Rio, Melbourne, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City. That’s right, Oklahoma City. We can add our voices with the multitudes who are taking a stand, and we don’t have to go very far to do it. We’ll be meeting on Sunday, Sept. 21 in St Louis. Meet at Kiener Plaza at 1pm. See Missouri Beyond Coal FB page. Let’s march for our children and clear a new path for low-carbon energy. Its possible - if we want it. Thank you.
