Marcus Doi and Kaeo Aliviado each had a hit and scored a run, Matt Cooper delivered an impressive outing on the mound, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior baseball team narrowly fell to No. 10 Texas, 3-2, on Friday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Cooper (2-1), who allowed his first earned run of the season today, worked into the eighth inning and finished with a line of three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in seven and one-third innings. Reliever Travis Duke (2-0) got the last two outs in the Hawai’i eighth to earn the win with John Curtiss picking up the save. The ‘Bows (6-7) scored their only runs of the game when they jumped on Longhorn starter Parker French early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Doi led off the game by reaching base on an error then Aliviado walked to put two runners on with no outs. After back-to-back RBI singles by Jordan Richartz and Juliene Jones, Hawai’i had put two runs on the scoreboard before UT’s first at bats. Cooper scattered four hits through the first three innings before Texas (11-3) finally got to him. Jacob Felts 2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) tripled to lead off the fourth inning then scored two batters later on Andy McGuire’s double down the left field line. McGuire tied the game off of a Shaw single. The UH’s bats went quiet mid-way through the game when French retired nine straight Hawai’i hitters. The Longhorns then broke the stalemate in the eighth inning with what proved to be the game winning run. Mark Payton (2 H, 1 R), who singled to lead off the inning and was then sacrificed to second, scored on a play at the plate off of a Felts base hit. Payton just beat the throw from Kalei Hanawahine in right field, sliding underneath Trevor Podratz‘s glove for the go-ahead run. The ‘Bows and Longhorns square off in a twin bill on Saturday. The two teams will play a seven and a nine inning game beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT (8:00 a.m. HT).
