Marcus Garvey Born in Saint Ann the largest parish in Jamaica in august 17, 1887 54 year after slavery was abolish, but only the beginning of segregation. Marcus Garvey living most of his young life not knowing about the racial gap between the colored and whites, even though he had been raised in segregation. but it was not until he was 14 when one of his white friends had called him a nigger. and was forbidden to see his white friends any more. that was the very fist taste of racism, Garvey was now aware and had seen it all around him ever since then, he was no longer close to whites. racism and inequality became prevalent forces in Garveys life. during the time St. Anns Bay was a impoverished town made up of low class people. his parents were well educated, but could not work for there was no work for them in the industrial country of Jamaica. they were forced to work as laborers, including Garvey and his sister. Garvey had to quit school and begin working when he was 14. by 1910 he had made a name for himself as a accomplished printer, writer, and politician. Garvey had also joined the nation club, the first organization in Jamaica which introduced anti-colonial thinking into Jamaica. inequality was a repeating encounter in the world outside of lower school in Jamaica. that Garvey had seen to much. hatred and inequality toward the black man made him wonder.he had moved around central America in 1910 to see how it was in other places finding out after spending two years after he had seen several countrys that were as bad as Jamaica. during his travels he had went to Britain surprise to see that their was no segregation like the west. Garvey had studied at Birbeck college. he usually studied a lot on his own visiting museums and following black leaders in England. an example is pan Africa movement in England. which thee main idea was to unify people of color against imperialism all over the world. gravy with his new found knowledge had returned home in 1914 and found UNIA which reflected Garveys beliefs and it was the tool he used to promote them. the objectives was to include: to establish a universal confraternity among the race, to promote the spirit of race pride and love, to reclaim the fallen race, to promote a conscientious Christian worship among the native tribe of Africa, to establish universities college and a secondary schools for the further education and culture of the boys and girls of the race, to conduct a worldwide commercial and industrial intercourse. Garveys doctrine centered on the idea of uniting a educated, strong, religious, black race. the focus was self-help. as the UNIA paper project: As the Jew is held together by his religion, the white races by the assumption and the unwritten law of superiority, and the Mongolian by the precious tie of blood, so likewise the Negro must be united in one grand racial hierarchy. in 1916 he moved to America, after the UNIA was establish in Jamaica he had started a branch in Harlem to promote his idea in the U.S. his idea after 1916 remained the same but he started advocating the idea of a black nationalist; that some black should go back to protect Africa from imperialism in 1919 he made the company black star shipping that took two boat loads of people to Liberia. but stopped after management problem this has been coined the back to Africa movement it was not to bring all back to Africa but give Africa a strong center of black power that would protect all blacks over the world from imperialism.
