Jules Massenet was a French composer best known for his operas, of which he wrote more than thirty. The two most frequently staged are Manon (1884) and Werther (1892). He also composed oratorios, ballets, orchestral works, incidental music, piano pieces, songs and other music. What I find interesting about Charlottes character is that she knows she should have gotten rid of these letters. She knows it is not healthy to hold on to Werther, but she does anyway.I think that this aria is really her downfall. It is where she reflects and shows the true feelings she has been feeling for Werther. Charlotte has done a farily good job of holding it together and being the dutiful wife, but this is where she really beings to lose control of her emotions.
