Maria João Pires and the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Iván Fischer tonight at Salle Pleyel! Beethoven’s concerto for piano no 4, that I just heard one month ago in Stockholm performed by Leif Ove Andsnes and the Kungliga Filharmonikerna: although all the merits of the Nobel’s orchestra, it was a rediscovery tonight with such a coherence between the piano and the orchestra. The concerto was preceded by Sándor Veress’s Threnos in memoriam Béla Bartók, composed in 1945, just after Bartók’s death: a short dramatic movement (threnos is an ancient Greek form of lament), very interesting and poignant to listen. After the intermission, what a pleasure to listen again to Antonín Dvořák’s symphony no 8, the symphony « from the Old World », I still love Dvořák’s creativity, his liberty with the winds, and his light humor.
