Marian R. Byrnes Natural Area Efforts continue to honor the lifetime of Marian R. Byrnes who passed in May of 2010. The 135 acre parcel along 103rd and Van Vlissingen was acquired by the Park District in 2011. A meeting on November 19, 2014 was held to share ideas and gather input on proposed improvements to the site. Suggested habitat improvements will be designed to restore habitat, provide space for long-term education and stewardship and attract community and families to nature-based outdoor recreation. Restoration activities will include the removal of invasive species, planting native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, and environmental remediation. Park improvements at this site will include wetland mitigation (an obligation transferred to Chicago Park District from the Chicago Department of Aviation as a result of wetland disturbance caused by the O’Hare Modernization Project). Additional improvements may include a family-oriented nature playground, hiking trails, viewing hills, eco-recreation activities, and community farming.
