Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is facing prosecution on contempt of court charges in Arizona for ignoring court orders directing the Sheriffs department to stop violating the rights of Hispanics. U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow told Arpaio that there was a very real possibility he would refer him to the U.S. Attorneys Office for criminal prosecution on contempt-of-court charges, later noting, I fully intend to. Snow did not waver from past statements and writings in outlining his grave concerns that Arpaios office has flouted Snows orders to prevent discrimination against Latinos. First on Snows list: Ten months after such orders, deputies made a traffic stop that led to complaints and an internal investigation of discriminatory enforcement. Exhibit B for Snow: Arpaios own words of defiance that he would continue arresting illegal immigrants and turning them over to federal immigration authorities. Exhibit C: Commanders never told rank-and-file deputies of the courts edicts, which Snow characterized as a serious violation, if not a contradiction, of the order, and it lasted months and months and months. The totality of actions left Snow to conclude: It is impossible for me to leave that — to let it go — without taking some sort of action.
