Marine Anglers: The holiday season is in full swing. I hope - TopicsExpress

Marine Anglers: The holiday season is in full swing. I hope that you had a happy Thanksgiving with family and friends. It is the season to overeat, lie around like beached whales, and to give thanks for all of the blessing that you received this year. Now you face the big challenge: Christmas shopping. The Dolphinfish Research Program has enjoyed many gifts in 2014, new revealing tag recoveries and an energized tagging staff. Volunteer anglers have tagged the second-highest number of fish in one year in the DRP, more than 2,000, with a dramatic surge in the number of anglers tagging in the Caribbean. This surge has resulted in the highest number of dolphin tagged in the Caribbean and tropical western north Atlantic in a single year. The program is also drawing new interest from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean scientific community thanks to the efforts of Dr. Wess Merten, who has published three papers in scientific journals and presented several talks to international fisheries conferences about the findings of the DRP research. From a scientific research perspective, 2014 has been a successful and exciting year for the DRP. As special holiday treat, I invite you to watch the full length video of A Journey Pelagic, produced by Wess Merten. This portrays the work of the Dolphinfish Program with emphasis on Dr. Wess Mertens research in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Using some great video, the film goes into our work with tagging by private anglers as well as the use of the high-tech satellite tag. He discusses some of the emerging movement patterns along with some very interesting behavior analysis. You can view the video at vimeo/pelagic/ajourneypelagicsp This issue of the newsletter talks about the emerging dolphin season in the Caribbean and the presence of male dolphin in the harvest. Fishermen commonly report catching ten and even 20 female dolphin for every male dolphin that they catch. So what is the male to female ratio? Hope you have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. News Flash: Argos Satellites have just picked up the first transmissions from a satellite tag that was deployed on a dolphin off Charleston, SC on June 3, 2014. You will not believe where it went. Note: I apologize for the tardiness of this newsletter. My computer crashed on November 14 due to a Windows 7 update, and I just now got it back working partially. Thanks for your patients. Good fishing, Don https://drive.google/file/d/0BwSvQHp-qZA-dXRhb3dkdERuLVE/view?usp=sharing
