Marine Corp birthday - same ownership since 1775 - the day before veterans day. The Marines most famous action of this early period occurred during the First Barbary War (1801–1805) against the Barbary pirates, when William Eaton and First Lieutenant Presley OBannon led eight Marines and 500 mercenaries in an effort to capture Tripoli (Libya). During the American Revolution, the pirates attacked American ships. On December 20, 1777, (during the American revolution) Moroccos Sultan Mohammed III declared that the American merchant ships would be under the protection of the sultanate and could thus enjoy safe passage into the Mediterranean and along the coast. The Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship stands as the U.S.s oldest non-broken friendship treaty with a foreign power. In 1787 Morocco had been the first nation to recognize the United States. So the Tripoli in the Marine Hymn is the same Tripoli that has been among the places harboring the bad guys today. Though the marines only reached Derna, the action at Tripoli has been immortalized in the Marines hymn and the Mameluke Sword carried by Marine officers. youtube/watch?v=SwS6OkgUXKE
