Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela has no less than seven players unavailable for Friday night’s PSL opener against champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Abel Mabaso, Sibusiso Kumalo and Kwanda Mngonyama are all unavailable for the clash because they are on loan from Downs, while foreigners John Paintsil, Mike Mohammed, Khumbulani Banda and Terrance Mandaza are all unlikely to have obtained their work permits by Friday. “These are seven players that at any given time you know you’d have in your starting lineup,” Komphela tells KickOff. “The fact that we are playing Sundowns makes it much more difficult.” Komphela will field a new-look Maritzburg side littered with youngsters on Friday after he unveiled 15 new faces this week, many of whom were identified by a series of trials hosted by the club. It is now a squad created by Komphela, as opposed to the squad that he inherited when taking the Team of Choice job at the start of the year.
