Mark 3:31-35 (NIV) - Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Today’s commentary by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org This may seem harsh in relationship to Jesus biological family, but he was forming a new humanity. In fact one of the main terms used in the New Testament for the church is “family”. We have an opportunity to extend our family ties beyond biology and into God’s spiritual DNA. Christians are not just church members—God wants us to regard each other as brothers and sisters, and therefore treat each other accordingly.
