Mark your calendars! Upcoming events at the Michigan Avenue branch of the Ypsilanti District Library: In two weeks! On Monday, December 1, 6:30 Ypsilanti’s Place in the Story of the Underground Railroad Learn about Ypsilanti’s important place in the history of the Underground Railroad. Many of Ypsilanti’s original black families were deeply involved in the nineteenth century’s most important black freedom struggle, whether from rural, free black communities in the Ohio River Valley, as passengers on the Underground Railroad, or as exiles to Canada or soldiers in the Civil War. Historian Matt Siegfried’s presentation will explore the people, debates, and events of the period, and give us insight into the unique experiences shared by the cross-border community living in Canada and southeast Michigan. Native American Ypsilanti / Landscape of the Area / History of the Huron River February 26, 6:30pm When Ypsilanti was first settled by Europeans in the 1820s, it was on the site of a Potawatomi village and in an area rich in evidence of Native American habitation. The Potawatomi who called this part of the Huron River (Nottawaseppi) home played a central role in the area’s history, from the founding of Detroit to Tecumseh and the War of 1812. Join local historian Matt Siegfried as we discuss the Native American landscape and history of the region. Ypsilanti African-Americans in the Civil War. YDL-Michigan, Thursday, April 9, 6:30pm Black Ypsilantians were at some of the Civil War’s most iconic moments, whether with Michigan’s 102nd United States Colored Troops or the “Glory” regiments of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantries. To commemorate the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the Civil War join local historian Matt Siegfried in a discussion of Ypsilanti’s rich African American Civil War history and their continued legacies in Ypsilanti.
