Though some fancy prices are coming under pressure, fine cut stones are holding up better than rounds. U.S. demand is supporting market for commercial-quality fancies, especially for goods under the carat. Buyers are very selective and insisting on excellent-shape proportions. Significant price differentials between excellent- and average-cut fancies prevail. Diamond trading in New York is still relatively quiet as diamantaires return from vacation. Demand from Mainland China is stable but overall activity is slow in preparation for the Chinese New Year retail season that is set to begin on February 19.
