Marloth Missive A huge advantage of living here in the bush is that most of us know the service providers and as a result we pay on average far less than people in the Big Stink pay for similar services. As an example, I was recently charged R450 to clear a blocked sewer by a local plumber. A couple of years ago, I was visiting my son in the Western Cape when he had to call out a plumber for a blocked sewer, and he had to pay R4,200 ! An old friend in Joburg was charged R14,000 to add one extra infra-red beam to his alarm system recently. By contrast, there are a couple of local mechanics wholl service your car for a few hundred Rand. The longer you live here, the more you get to find out about the service providers who live here. Plumbers and electricians, mechanics and carpenters, even builders and handymen, we have them all and, if youre used to city prices, youll be blown away by how cheap and efficient they are. A huge added advantage is that they are all operating in a restricted market and have to deliver good service or go out of business. Unlike their city counterparts, they cant blow us off with the take it or leave it attitude that seems to be a feature of their counterparts in the city. When you add our clean air, quiet roads and neighbourhoods, and the beautiful natural bush we live in, we realise why so many contributors to the Marloth Park Facebook pages are jealous of us permanent residents. The lone wildebeest trimming the grass outside my window has nodded in agreement. He too thinks this is paradise!
