Marloth Missive Yesterday afternoon I was working on my computer with my back to the back door, which was open. We can do that in Marloth Park. I heard the gang of Banded Mongoose approaching, constantly chatting with each other, and called to my wife that her bunch of beggars were on their way. She was on the phone so she didnt respond immediately. Next minute I hear that their chatter has got really loud and I turn around to see four of them in the doorway. They are standing up on their hind legs in their inimitable way. Because they know where their treat comes from, they ignore me completely and direct their calls into the house. These clever little creatures had heard my wifes voice and recognised it. They know that shes the one who hands out the eggs. When she came into the kitchen, the four scouts ran back down the stairs and joined the rest of the gang. We cannot afford to feed all of these guys, so theres always a scuffle for the couple of eggs they get, with lots of growling and terrible mongoose swear words flying around until the eggs are consumed. They wait around for a few minutes with their little pink noses pointed at their benefactor in hope, heads nodding up and down. Then they realise that theyve had all theyre going to get and, grumbling to each other about the stinginess of Marloth Parks pensioners, they trot off into the bush. One or two of them will turn to check that granny hasnt perhaps changed her mind. Then they mutter something which, loosely translated, means well be back! We look forward to their return!
