Marrero/Verdasco Boost London Chances With St. Petersburg Win: Top seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco boosted their chances of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time as they won their first ATP World Tour title of the season together on Sunday. The Spaniards defeated Dominic Inglot and Denis Istomin 7-6(6), 6-3 in the final of the St. Petersburg Open. Marrero and Verdasco are currently eighth in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings and earned 250 rankings points with victory in St. Petersburg. The top eight teams at the close of the regular season will guarantee their spot in the elite field in London in November. “First of all I’d like to thank my partner, David," said Verdasco. "It’s our fifth title together and our first title of 2013. With this victory we get a little bit closer to getting to London. That’s our goal and hopefully we will make it.” Against Inglot and Istomin, Marrero and Verdasco won 70 per cent of their service points and converted one of their three break points, claiming victory in 70 minutes. The Spaniards won their fifth team title. Last year, the duo went 4-1 in ATP World Tour finals, capturing titles on clay in Hamburg, Umag, Acapulco and Buenos Aires. The 33-year-old Marrero claimed his third title of the season, having triumphed in Acapulco with Lukasz Kubot and Umag with Martin Klizan. He improved to a 9-6 finals record. Verdasco, 29, was contesting his first doubles final of the season and improved to a 6-3 mark. Inglot and Istomin were playing together for the first time this week and had ousted second seeds Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau in the first round.
