Marshall Rosenberg, born on this day October 6, 1934, - Canton, Ohio. (my town!) Marshall Rosenberg has with great perseverance over 5 decades sought to sow the seeds of an encouraging, empathic culture of relating vs. the traditional dominion culture - based upon right and wrong. His trainings and education, known as Non-Violent Communication - NVC - have been adapted and used in a wide variety of settings: socio-political, education, relationship therapy, mediation, and even in intra-personal communication. His understanding is that people are generally in a reactive mode, based upon unmet and unrecognized needs that are unsuccessfully met through strategies of aggression, victimization, maneuvering, withdrawal, shaming, blaming, authoritarian posturing - that is domination. His further understanding is that these strategies do not work and are not sustainable. And the commensurate understanding is that by being skillfully in touch with our core needs beneath the masks, we know how to communicate clearly and can assist others in doing so as well. His approach stems from an integration of his own process with the work of Carl rogers, Riane Eisler, Walter Wink and others. I have done some of his work and have two friends who are excellent NVC practitioners and trainers amid their other life responsibilities. i am impressed with their understanding of the work, and their way of making it in the moment and not a mechanical repetition of technique. I find NVC goes very well with Byron Katies work in self-acceptance, self-mastery, relational freedom and ego-self transcendence - all to make happier and more resourceful ways of being in the small and at large. The two muppets are our inner critic and ...oopps forgot...you fill in the blank..
